Located in sub-Saharan Africa, Namibia is still recovering from years of brutal colonization and residual impacts of the Apartheid system with one of the widest income disparities in the world. Food is scarce and hope is illusive for 90% of those living in slums. Spiritually, Namibia is considered 85% Christian, but very few hear the true Gospel while a false prosperity gospel runs rampant, often confusing and hurting the poor even more. The youth are particularly vulnerable with absent fathers and families that are struggling to survive.
Agape Youth is a Christian youth group formed with the goal of teaching and equipping the youth in Namibia to change the culture from within. Situated at the heart of the slums in the city of Windhoek, Agape Youth children hear the true Gospel preached weekly by Pastor Steve Hong, a missionary and a US-trained physician currently working for the Center for Disease Control in Namibia. Steve Hong, his wife Seo Yeon Hong, and Jennifer Chon are full-time missionaries from our church dedicated to the growth of this ministry, working alongside the We Love Africa Foundation established by Korean missionaries in the region.
HOW IS NEW HOPE FELLOWSHIP INVOLVED?
Having passionately received God's call to spread the true Gospel across all nations, New Hope Fellowship supports our beloved NHF family abroad in Namibia in a variety of ways – one of which is to fund Agape Youth's annual Bible Camp. In addition to prayer and fundraising, our church sends out members to join the Agape Youth staff for two weeks to help the Bible Camp come to life.
The purpose of our trips to Windhoek, Namibia include:
- Serving as camp counselors/mentors and supporting staff at Agape Youth Bible Camp
- Humbly listening, learning, and building meaningful relationships with the youth, who desperately desire spiritual community
- Supporting and encouraging the local Korean missionaries and the Hongs who lead Agape Youth
- Faithfully praying for the youth and staff even after our team returns, and using what we learned to serve our local communities with greater clarity of the universal longings of the modern youth
